Jeff Cooper Legacy Foundation Donation to the NRA Whittington Center

December 17, 2025 Lindy Comments 0 Comment
We are proud to announce our donation to the NRA Whittington Center.  This donation takes the form of an endowment which will fund maintenance and enhancements to the existing Cooper Range at the Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico, in perpetuity.
The Cooper Range is a multi-use shooting range at Whittington that includes a cabin for meeting space, a Rifle Walk, covered benches for sighting-in rifles, a pistol bay and several opportunities for long-range challenges. The range presents the opportunity to set up many of Jeff Cooper’s classic exercises, including shooting clay birds with rifles.
The Cooper Range was set up over 20 years ago through the generous support of the following people/entities:
                       Jeff and Janelle Cooper
                        John Gannaway
                        Joe and Lindy Wisdom
                        John Moore Family
                        Dan Predovich Family
                        Jim Haas Family
                        Tom Russell Family
                        Larry Larsen
                        Rich Wyatt
                        GSI
                        Steyr
The range has been enjoyed by many over the years and this current donation will assure that it will continue to be a special place for all who have been positively influenced by Jeff Cooper and his teachings.
May we all continue to ride, shoot straight and speak the truth.

Shooting some clays with the granddaughter. You might recognize the rifle as “Scout 1”- A .308 Remington 600 with a Leupold M8-2X. As far as we know, nobody knows where this rifle is today.

Jeff with his first Big Game rifle, A Remington M30S in 30-06 acquired when he was 16. It was re-stocked and re-furbished, probably in the 60’s. Here he is using a target sling and conventionally-mounted scope. He had not yet developed the Scout Rifle and CW Sling concept.

Jeff Cooper and Eric Ching, May 1986, While attending a rifle class at the American Pistol Institute (API, later Gunsite Academy) in Paulden, Arizona, under Jeff Cooper.

Eric Ching (1951–2007) took the rifle class that year, grew frustrated with the limitations of the then-standard CW/military-style shooting sling, and designed the three-point “Ching Sling” as a faster, more practical alternative. Jeff endorsed and adopted it for the scout rifle concept, naming it after him.

Eric was a Gunsite student and later a long-time Rangemaster/instructor.

Random Quote:

“Weapons compound man’s power to achieve; they amplify the capabilities of both the good man and the bad, and to exactly the same degree, having no will of their own. Thus we must regard them as servants, not masters – and good servants to good men. Without them, man is diminished, and his opportunities to fulfill his destiny are lessened. An unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it.”
